There was speculation surrounding the future of manager Rafael Benitez after Liverpool crumbled to a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of their Premier League campaign, however, the club and the Spaniard have moved to quash such claims. "It's 1000 per cent rubbish," managing director Christian Purslow told The Sun. "I had dinner with 'Rafa' and the fact I had not heard the rumours should tell you everything about how true they are." Meanwhile, the gaffer had reassuring words for the fans, reiterating his commitment to the club. "I remain 100 per cent committed to the club, the fans and players," said Benitez. The speculation surrounding an exit arose when bookmakers suspended markets concerning the future of the former Valencia boss after the Merseyside club lost to Spurs on Sunday. |

Real Madrid playmaker Rafael van der Vaart is the subject of interest from Liverpool and Arsenal as his Real Madrid career looks to end. A fire sale has been expected at The Bernabeu ever since the multi-world-record-breaking transfers of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo. Fellow Dutchman Wesley Sneijder is expected to complete a £15 million move to Inter as the Spanish giants try to recoup some of their huge financial outlay this summer. Yesterday reports in Sport claimed that Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is on the verge of offering Real Madrid €11.5m for the highly-rated midfielder. However today provided fresh speculation in The Metro, suggests Arsene Wenger is keen on bringing the Holland international to The Emirates. The same publication suggests there is still chance of a return to Holland for family reasons with a switch to Martin Jol's Ajax. One player who is close to a Real exit is striker Alvaro Negredo however it will not be with Premier League Hull City. The frontman has decided to stay in Spain after turning down Hull City The striker made the trip to Humberside for talks with Tigers boss Phil Brown yesterday and now seems set on move to Real Zaragoza. |

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has admitted that a penalty should not have been awarded to his side during the 2-2 draw with Birmingham City. The Reds were trailing 2-1 when David Ngog dramatically went down in the area, making the referee believe that Lee Carsley had fouled the player. Steven Gerrard stepped up to the hot-plate and scored the leveller that ensured that the Merseyside club took a point from the encounter. The former Valencia boss has explained that he did not think the situation warranted a penalty, and confirmed that the striker did not think so either. However, he stopped short of branding the Frenchman a diver, instead claiming that his side were in need of some luck, following all he misery they have endured in recent times. "It was clear, it was not a penalty," Benitez is quoted on Sport as saying. "I have asked Ngog and he said that maybe it wasn't a penalty, either. "But there have been many times this season that we have not been awarded penalties we should have had." |
