Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena has repeatedlyly voiced his desire to return to Italy and this summer Napoli had shown a keen interest in the player, but, according to the player's agent Federico Pastorello, the deal is dead in the water. "With the directors of Napoli I have not had contact for ten days, it is logicial to think that when we have not spoken for so long, the negotiations is defined as over," he told PianetoAzzurro.it. "When you want a player, certain steps have to be taken that have not been made here. Obviously, they have a different objective or have decided to forgo the purchase of an outside left [defender]." "We had spoken to the Rossoneri a long time ago, but they have not shown any interest in the player," he revealed in conclusion. Last week, the Italian international had claimed he was "waiting for a better contract offer" from the southern Italian outfit, but it appears they have given up on signing the ex-Udinese player. |

Real Madrid have had an offer of €32 million accepted by Liverpool for Xabi Alonso and a pre-accord has been sealed that will see the player move back to Spain this week, according to a report. A meeting between the two clubs in Barcelona at the weekend saw a thaw in the frosty stand-off, and with Los Merengues showing some goodwill, an agreement was reached, Sport state. Liverpool were holding out for £30 million, while Madrid were keen to pay only €30million, but the rise of €2m has seen the Reds accept the offer. The Spanish giants' director general, Jose Angel Sanchez, met with Liverpool's financial director, Christian Purslow, in a hotel within walking distance of Camp Nou. Talks were friendly, but firm, Sport believe, with Madrid accepting that they would have to move their bid up if they were to persuade Liverpool to let the player go. Alonso has made it clear that he wants to make the switch and become part of Florentino Perez's new look Galacticos, and for such a sum Rafa Benitez is willing to do business. A deal with the player himself was reached weeks ago and he has had to remain patient while the two clubs postured and searched for a way forward, but now that has happened he can prepare for the transfer. Before and after Liverpool's friendly against Espanyol in Barcelona on Sunday, Alonso, whose father Periko played for the Blaugrana, remained tight-lipped about joining Real Madrid. I hope you break your leg you pr1ck |

Liverpool have signed Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani, according to the latest reports from Spain. Marca claims Roma have accepted an €18million bid for the Italian midfielder. Reds manager Rafael Benitez is said to be keen on the Italian. The report suggests the Spanish coach has moved in quickly in an attempt to have an alternative to Xabi Alonso. Voices in Spain claim Alonso is on the verge of joining Real Madrid, and it appears Liverpool have wasted no time in signing his replacement. It is said Liverpool are still trying to negotiate a deal with Real Madrid for Alonso. According to Marca, the Reds want nothing less than €35m for the Spanish international. Sky Sport Italia are speculating that Aquilani has agreed to a four year deal worth €4m per season with the Reds, but the move is hinging on Alonso's passage to the Bernabeu. Despite the reports in Spain, there has been no official confirmation from Roma regarding the news that Aquilani has signed for the Anfield-based club |

Xabi Alonso has been subject to arguably the longest-running transfer saga of this summer, and after a long period of chasing the Liverpool midfielder, Real Madrid are reportedly set to match the poaching price placed on the player's head. Anfield officials met with the Galacticos executive director-general Jose Angel Sanchez before the Reds' pre-season game against Espanyol, in order to put to rest the speculation surrounding the future of the pass-master. The Liverpool Daily Post claims that the 'White House' is willing to match the €35 million asking price, and add a further €2.5m based on the performances put out by the Spaniard during the first two years of his time at the Bernabeu. Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow spoke about the meeting between the officials of the two powerhouses, and outlined the story so far. "This [meeting] has only served to put our positions on the table," said Purslow. “We need to continue talking. “Rafa [Benitez] arranged this knowing what was coming. It was important that we know. So far, most of what is being said is a lie. We were negotiating through the press. It makes no sense." Purslow hinted that a deal would reach fruition, but did not specify a timeframe. "Now, I have been impressed by Madrid and Jose Angel. They [Benitez and Jose Angel] are friends and will remain so,” he concluded. |

Standard Liege captain Steven Defour has admitted a move to Liverpool would be an opportunity he couldn't turn away. The dynamic youngster is highly respected by Liverpool and it is believed the Merseysiders could make a move if Xabi Alonso departs to Real Madrid. The youngster is quoted in The Daily Mail as saying, "I have an agreement with Standard Liege that I could go to a top club, and Liverpool fit the bill." Madrid themselves have shown an interest in acquiring the 21-year-old and Defour's agent, Paul Stefani, confirmed that both clubs were interested in his client. "Steven's name has been mentioned not only at Real Madrid, but also at Liverpool, they are looking at him too," he said. "Normally he would stay for another year, but nobody could say no to clubs like those, and Liege would not stand in his way." Any transfer of the Belgian international has made close to 100 appearances for his club and has become a regular with the national side. |

As the Xabi Alonso transfer saga reaches its final lap, its shadow appears to have included Alberto Aquilani, as Liverpool look set to swoop in on the midfielder the moment they sniff the Madrid millions. However, the Italian will reportedly have to prove his fitness before the club decides to go ahead with his transfer. According to The Liverpool Echo, the 25-year-old Roma player's move will hinge on a stringent medical conducted by the Merseyside club's staff. The newspaper claims that the Reds are confident of sniping the Italian international from the Giallorossi, and will step up their efforts by another gear once the Alonso move to Madrid has been concluded. Meanwhile, Aquilani's fitness remains a big concern, as the player underwent surgery on his right ankle in May and has remained on the sidelines since. Reds manager Rafael Benitez is known to be an admirer of the Lupi player's technical ability, but is unsure of whether the youth product of the capital club can make the big leap and adapt to the physical side of English football. Aquilani's last appearance at the Olimpico was during the Champions League game against Arsenal, which the hosts lost following a penalty-shootout. He has made only 14 league appearances for la Maggica last season due to injuries. The injury plagued player has recently signed a new contract with the capital club, which is supposed to tie him to the peninsula until 2013. But he has continued to be heavily linked with Liverpool. Meanwhile, contrary to recent reports, the newspaper has also claimed that Juventus midfielder Christian Poulsen is not on Liverpool's radar, and that there has been no contact between the two clubs to prove otherwise. |

i can't believe how the LFC fans have been reacting to the departure of Alonso, he put a good period of great service to the club in and you all abuse him? he is allowed to play in his home country you know, especially as they have one of Europe's biggest leagues running there! |

John Arne Riise, a former Liverpool player now plying his trade at Roma, believes team-mate Alberto Aquilani has what it takes to be a success in the Premier League. The Norwegian international, who has a thunderous left-footed shot, admitted to The Daily Express that upon his own move from Liverpool to Roma, he had little idea who Aquilani was, but it did not take long for him to learn of the Italian's ability. Riise, 28, opined that Aquilani is the greater threat than Xabi Alonso, as he "runs more than Xabi" and gets into the box more. “When I first came to Roma, I didn’t know a thing about Aquilani," Riise stated. "I knew all about Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi and Philippe Mexes, of course, but Aquilani was the player who surprised me the most in my first months with what he could do.” On the specific capabilities that make Aquilani stand out, Riise said, “He’s really good on the ball, with good passing, good movement, he works hard and is a good professional. He likes to have the ball at his feet but not because he likes to dribble, he just wants to keep the team moving. He never stands still, he’s always on the run. “He certainly runs more than Xabi and is probably more dangerous in terms of getting in the box and trying to score goals. “When I came to Rome he was my neighbour and helped me out a lot. He’s a good friend. Liverpool will be getting a very good player.” Riise also believes it will not take long for Aquilani to adapt to a league that focuses more on pace, power and physicality than Serie A. “There is an obvious difference between the Italian and English leagues. Here it is more tactical whereas in England you’re playing 90 minutes up and down, up and down, and there is more emphasis on power and physical force," the Norwegian explained. “But Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t all about physique, and he has been the best player in the Premier League in recent seasons. Everyone can adapt. It just takes time. The key is how long it takes. I was lucky. I fitted in quite quickly when I joined from Monaco. Alberto is someone who wants to make the most of his talent and wants to prove himself, so if Liverpool come in for you, it is very hard to say no.” |
